About the Mining Learnership Programme
The Mining Learnership Programme at Sishen Mine is part of Anglo American’s commitment to community development and Employment Equity. It focuses on empowering unemployed South African youth, particularly those from labour-sending areas in the Northern Cape, including the JTG District.
This program aims to:
- Equip learners with essential skills for mining operations.
- Promote safety, inclusivity, and sustainable practices.
- Prepare participants to contribute meaningfully to the mining industry.
Over 18 months, participants will gain hands-on experience in mining techniques, machinery operation, and safety protocols. In addition, the program fosters personal growth and career development, with a strong focus on inclusivity and community engagement.
Who Can Apply?
To be eligible, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Age: 18 to 35 years old.
- Employment Status: Must be currently unemployed.
- Educational Background: Grade 12 or N3 Technical Certificate (Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy required; Physical Science advantageous).
- Citizenship: South African citizen with a valid ID document.
- Driver’s License: Valid South African driver’s license.
- Residency: Proof of residential address required.
Preference will be given to applicants from designated groups as defined by Employment Equity, particularly those residing in the JTG District and other labour-sending areas in the Northern Cape.
Job Responsibilities
As a participant in the Mining Learnership Programme, you will have various responsibilities aimed at developing your skills and ensuring a comprehensive learning experience. These include:
1. Safety, Health, and Environment
- Adhere to all safety and health regulations during training and practical assignments.
- Maintain a clean and organized workspace to ensure safety and efficiency.
- Actively participate in SLAMs (Stop, Look, Assess, Manage), HPHs (High Potential Hazards), and risk assessments.
2. Performance and Delivery
- Attend theoretical and practical training sessions.
- Perform supervised tasks in mining operations, including machinery operation, mining techniques, and plant maintenance.
- Assist with daily operations such as monitoring equipment, recording data, and troubleshooting minor issues.
- Acquire technical skills related to plant and mining processes, equipment handling, and production optimization.
- Collaborate with team members to meet training and production goals.
- Complete assessments to demonstrate progress and competency.
- Document your training progress and submit reports as required.
- Positively represent Anglo American in interactions with local communities.
Qualifications and Technical Knowledge
Minimum Qualifications
- Grade 12/N3 Technical Certificate with Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy.
- Physical Science will be an added advantage.
- Must possess a valid South African ID and driver’s license.
- Proof of residential address.
Technical Knowledge and Skills
- Ability to understand instructions and perform basic calculations.
- Introductory knowledge of workplace safety and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Basic understanding of mining environments, waste management, and minimizing environmental impact.
